Tugkaran uses open source content management systems (CMS) to run your website. This means anyone who knows how to use a browser can update your website.

Many websites are still published manually—a writer submits a story to a designated webmaster who then lays it out and adds elements like photos, adds links to make the story appear in the homepage, and then upload the page to the website.

Manual publishing makes your company dependent on technical staff to update your site’s content. The tedious way of adding new content also discourages people from writing new entries. Manual publishing is also prone to error because you need to edit by yourself such things as the listing of articles or related stories.

By using CMS, Tugkaran empowers you to manage your website. Adding articles is easy—you just write the story, designate the section it is supposed to appear in and then click on the publish button. A CMS also allows you to designate employees who will be adding content or features to your site.

A CMS will also allow you to add interactivity to your site and communicate with your costumers.

Tugkaran: Staging ground for your web presence builds on open source technology. We use open source content management systems (CMS) to manage or to allow you to manage your website.

By using open source CMS, you are assured of:

Security

Open source CMS packages are maintained by a huge community of users and developers. This means problems are easily uncovered because users of the system are involved in the development. Users can report security holes or certain problems in the system. They can also suggest improvements.

If security risks are uncovered in the software, a fix is usually available shortly after it is reported because there are hundreds of developers ready to plug security holes and fix problems in the system. Most open source CMS projects also have a dedicated team to verify and fix security holes that are reported.

If you use a proprietary system by a web development company, the identification of security holes or software problems usually take time, if they are identified at all. This is because the development is limited only to the company. You will have to wait for the developer to fix a security hole or an error in the program. This takes time.

The latest features

By using open source CMS, you get the latest features in online publishing because of the very nature of its development. Open source CMS development is driven by users—people who actually run their own websites and have specific needs for certain features. If the feature you need isn’t included in the base package, you can probably use a contributed module or add-on to run it.

Proprietary CMSes, on the other hand, are developed by smaller teams because even the biggest web development company can’t hire enough workers to match the number of developers in open source communities. Proprietary CMSes also do not have the benefit of the type of feedback that can only come from such active and involved user communities as those you see in open source projects.

Constant upgrading of features

The open source CMSes Tugkaran uses are actively and continually being developed. This means that your website will always have the latest tools to assist you in making your website an effective tool to enhance your company’s profile or business.

Proprietary systems, on the other hand, are dependent on contracts and developers in their employ. To get the latest version, you might have to actually buy a new system and get the company to install it for you. You might not even get an update if the developer in charge of the feature suddenly leaves the company.

With the CMSes that we use, you can upgrade it yourself (if you are confident of being able to pull it off) or you can place us on retainer to take care of this.

Wider option for support

By using open source systems, we free you from being locked in to us for support, upgrades or enhancements. If you want to have somebody else maintain your website, you can choose from thousands of developers who are already familiar with the system.

If you use a proprietary CMS, you will be looked in to the company that owns it. You will be forced to stay with them because only their developers or relatively few ones from outside the company are familiar with the CMS.
